Agartala Press Club Journalist Attacked by Miscreants, Police Inaction Sparks Outrage

Agartala, January 14: In a shocking incident, Agartala Press Club member and journalist Mrinal Debnath was allegedly attacked by miscreants while returning home after work at the Bardowali Choudhury Mill area late Tuesday night. The incident has triggered strong condemnation from the Agartala Press Club, which has criticised the alleged inaction of the local police.

According to reports, the attack took place around 11:15 pm on January 13, when Debnath was returning home after completing his professional duties at a daily newspaper office. He was allegedly waylaid by four unidentified miscreants who launched a murderous assault on him and issued threats to kill him.

What has raised serious concern is the alleged lack of response from the police. Sources said that after the attack, repeated attempts were made to contact the Officer-in-Charge of the local AD Nagar Police Station, but there was no response. The role of the police during the incident has been described as unsatisfactory, drawing sharp criticism from the journalistic fraternity.

Despite sustaining injuries, Debnath reportedly managed to escape with his life. With the help of colleagues, he was rushed to IGM Hospital, where he received primary medical treatment. His condition is stated to be stable.

Strongly condemning the attack, the Agartala Press Club termed the incident a direct assault on press freedom and the safety of journalists. The organisation has expressed deep concern over the apparent negligence of the police and has brought the matter to the attention of the local MLA and Chief Minister of Tripura, Dr Manik Saha.

The Press Club has demanded immediate arrest of those involved in the attack and has urged the police administration to ensure exemplary punishment for the perpetrators. It has also called for enhanced security measures for journalists, especially those working late hours.

The incident has reignited concerns over the safety of media professionals in the state and underscored the urgent need for prompt and accountable action by law enforcement agencies to prevent such attacks in the future.
