Agartala, June 7: The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a Bangladeshi national and an Indian broker from Agartala railway station on Saturday for illegal entry into India. The duo was intercepted while preparing to board a train to Kolkata, using the station as a transit point.
The arrests were made following a tip-off received by the police, which indicated that a Bangladeshi citizen, aided by an Indian tout, was planning to leave for another state from Agartala. Acting swiftly on the intelligence input, the GRP conducted a joint operation at the station and detained the two suspects for questioning.
During initial interrogation, both individuals confessed to illegally entering Tripura by crossing the international border with the help of brokers. The Bangladeshi national was identified as Shyamal Chandra Barman (23), a resident of Gaibandha district in Bangladesh. He was being aided by Abhijit Sarkar (32), an Indian national from Trishabari, Teliamura.
Police officials stated that despite heightened surveillance by the Border Security Force (BSF), illegal infiltration from Bangladesh into Tripura remains a regular occurrence. Brokers and touts often assist individuals in bypassing border fences and checkpoints.
“A case has been formally registered, and both accused will be presented before the court. Further investigation is underway to uncover the network facilitating such cross-border illegal movements,” a police official said.
Law enforcement agencies have reiterated their focus on increasing vigilance along the border and in sensitive transit locations like railway stations to prevent illegal immigration and curb trafficking activities.
Authorities believe this incident may be part of a larger cross-border racket and are working to identify other members involved in the network.
