Agartala, June 9 : A high-level delegation from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), led by its Director Dr. M. Srinivas concluded a three-day assessment of Tripura’s healthcare infrastructure on Monday. The delegation also revealed its plans to submit a detailed report to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, recommending steps to improve facilities here in the state.
Speaking to the media at the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), Dr. Srinivas said the visit was conducted at the request of the Chief Minister, who also holds the Health portfolio. “We reviewed the state’s hospital infrastructure, interacted with patients and medical staff, and assessed service delivery on the ground. Our report will include recommendations aimed at strengthening healthcare services in Tripura,” he said.
When asked about the possibility of establishing an AIIMS branch in the state—a long-standing demand—Dr. Srinivas clarified that such decisions rest with the central and state governments. “Our role is advisory. We are here to help improve existing facilities and hospital administration,” he added.
Joining him at the briefing, Dr. Ramesh Agarwal praised Tripura’s healthcare indicators. “With over 5,000 hospital beds for a population of 40 lakh, Tripura exceeds the national benchmark of one bed per 1,000 people. The state also boasts a lower infant mortality rate than the national average,” he noted. He also highlighted the availability of trauma care in four district hospitals and neurosurgical services.
On staffing concerns, Dr. Agarwal emphasized the importance of focusing on the nurse-patient ratio. “While the doctor-patient ratio improves when trainee doctors are counted, the real gap lies in nursing staff. This is a systemic issue that needs attention at both state and national levels,” he said.
The final report is expected to guide policy interventions and potential upgrades in Tripura’s healthcare delivery system.
