Agartala, April 10, 2024: In a dramatic turn of events, eight women members of the Self Help Group (SHG) expressed their frustration with the Laljuri Canada Bank by locking its doors around noon today. The bank staff found themselves confined within the premises as the women took a stand against loan denials.

The SHG members, seeking financial support for their livelihood initiatives, had faced repeated setbacks in securing loans from the bank. Their grievances culminated in this bold act of protest.

Word of the incident spread rapidly, prompting immediate action. Both the former and current Block Development Officers (BDO) of Laljuri block rushed to the scene. They engaged in discussions with the bank authorities and the agitated women, attempting to find a resolution.

Local police officials swiftly arrived at the bank, responding to the situation. Laljuri RD Block BDO Sourav Alam was also present, aiming to mediate and defuse tensions.

After an extended dialogue, the bank staff assured the SHG members that Laljuri Canada Bank would extend loan services to all eight SHGs by the first week of May. Encouraged by this commitment, the women decided to unlock the bank after a tense standoff lasting two hours.

In addition to the loan issue, there have been allegations that the bank authorities mistreated several customers, including elderly individuals. These claims are now under scrutiny.

This incident underscores the importance of transparent and accessible financial services for community development. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing fair treatment and accountability in banking practices.
