Sonamura, Sep. 8 : Tensions flared on Friday evening when an elected representative of the local Panchayat had been harassed and heckled by BSF officials at Kalamchoura area. The incident sparked resentment among the locals leading to a road blockade.Bapan Sarkar, elected head of South Kolamchoura Gram Panchayat, was allegedly harassed by Border. Security Force (BSF) jawans.

The incident occurred around 5 pm on September 5 near the South Kolamchoura market.

Eyewitnesses claimed that Anil, a BSF jawan posted at the Kolamchoura Border Outpost under the 49th Battalion, verbally abused the village head with obscene language and even attempted to assault him. Locals intervened quickly and prevented the situation from escalating.

The incident triggered widespread outrage. On Monday morning, villagers staged a protest and blocked the road in front of the BSF camp, demanding a public apology for the humiliation of their elected leader. The blockade, which began around 9 am, stranded hundreds of vehicles and caused immense hardship to commuters.

Tensions escalated when BSF personnel tried to disperse the protestors, but the situation was defused around 11 am after senior officers intervened. Deputy Commandant Bishnu Kumar and Company Commander Gaurav Swami arrived at the spot, expressed regret over the incident, and assured villagers that such misconduct would not recur. Following a meeting with Bapan Sarkar, the village head, the protest was withdrawn.

Locals pointed out that if an elected village head could face such harassment at the hands of BSF, the safety of ordinary residents remains deeply uncertain. The problem, they said, is not confined to Kolamchoura alone but extends to Rahimpur, Putia, Boxanagar, and Kalsimura—villages where people live with an overwhelming sense of insecurity right along the border.
