In Tripura, the state's successful project of providing subsidized goods through fair price shops is facing significant challenges, hindering the seamless distribution of essential commodities to the public. The primary issues include long queues at ration shops and inadequate storage facilities, resulting in a harrowing experience for beneficiaries seeking to avail the government-established food security measures.According to reports, ration shop owners are struggling to maintain proper storage arrangements, leading to delays and inconveniences for those dependent on subsidized goods. The situation is particularly severe in tribal areas, where individuals often have to traverse long distances, up to 10 km on foot, to reach fair price shops, only to encounter technological barriers and insufficient internet facilities.Beneficiaries in Tripura have voiced their grievances, citing technological issues as a major obstacle in obtaining subsidized goods through fair price shops. The thumb impression process, which is crucial for authentication, faces disruptions due to internet-related problems, resulting in prolonged waiting times and increased frustration among the public. In a statement, a person waiting in line highlighted the challenges faced by those living in remote areas, emphasizing the need for improved technology and internet accessibility to ensure a smooth distribution process. While the government's initiative to ensure food security through fair price shops is commendable, reports suggest that the shops themselves are not being maintained in a sophisticated manner. Ration shop owners must adhere to higher standards to provide quality goods to beneficiaries, aligning with the well-designed government program aimed at public welfare. The Economic Review of Tripura, published by the Government of Tripura, disclosed that the number of Fair Price Shops (FPS) in the state increased to 1908 in 2021-22, compared to 1822 in the previous fiscal year. However, challenges persist in optimizing the distribution process and ensuring a seamless experience for the 37,11,106 persons covered under the Public Distribution System. As the challenges faced by ration shops in Tripura continue to impede public access to subsidized goods, urgent action is needed. Government authorities and officers responsible for overseeing the Public Distribution System must address issues related to storage, technology, and internet accessibility to ensure the effective implementation of the well-intentioned initiative for the benefit of the people
