N. F. Railway conducts drives against illegal activities in stations Collected more than Rs 10.54 lakhs as fine 75 stations

N. F. Railway in its endeavour to free its station premises from illegal activities regularly
conducts drives against illegal/unauthorized hawkers/vendors, smokers and litterers. During the
last two months series of drives were conducted over the five divisions of N. F. Railway, thereby
collected an amount of Rs. 10.54 lakhs as fine. 4661 persons were prosecuted in this connection
under relevant sections of The Railways Act, 1989.
During the month of April & May, 2023 over the five divisions of N. F. Railway, Rs. 3.20 lakhs
were collected as fine from illegal/unauthorized hawkers/vendors and 1077 persons were
prosecuted. Apart from this, Rs. 1.74 lakhs & Rs. 5.59 lakhs were collected as fine from persons
smoking and littering respectively at station premises. In this connection 926 smokers and 2658
persons littering were prosecuted.
Total 75 major railway stations have been declared free of illegal hawking. 14 stations
including Katihar, Siliguri, New Jalpaiguri under Katihar division, 14 stations including Guwahati,
Kamakhya, Lumding under Lumding division, 18 stations including Kokrajhar, New Coochbehar,
New Alipurduar under Alipurduar division, 13 stations including Dibrugarh, New Tinsukia, Mariani
under Tinsukia division and 16 stations including Rangiya, Goalpara Town, New Bongaigaon under
Rangiya division are freed from illegal/unauthorized hawkers/vendors and these efforts will be
sustained by RPF to keep the major railway stations free and to ensure better quality food to the
passengers besides improving the public sanitation at the railway stations tremendously as a part
of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Illegal hawking, smoking, littering in trains and station premises are prohibited under
section 144 (A), under section 167 and under section 145 of The Railways Act, 1989 respectively.
