Tripura Launches Free Medical Service Program for Children with Congenital Disabilities

Agartala: July 04: The Government of Tripura has introduced a commendable initiative to support children born with congenital physical deformities and defects. This program aims to provide high-quality healthcare, enabling these children to lead fulfilling lives. Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha made the announcement during a state-level function held at the Agartala Government Nursing College auditorium. The occasion marked the inauguration of a congenital heart disease detection camp, organized jointly by the National Health Mission Tripura branch and Apollo Children’s Hospital.

The Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), launched in 2014, focuses on early identification of congenital conditions such as physical deformities, internal deficiencies, developmental defects, and physical disabilities. Across the state, 48 dedicated mobile health teams operate under the RBSK. They screen children aged 0 to 6 years at Anganwadi centers and extend their services to school-aged children (6 to 18 years). The program provides early treatment and, when necessary, surgical interventions for various congenital defects, including congenital heart disease, hearing impairment, clubfoot, visual impairment, and neural tube defects.

Tripura boasts three District Early Intervention Centers in Gomati, Dhalai, and Unakoti districts, with plans underway to establish another center in West Tripura. Notably, 835 hearing aids have been distributed free of cost to children with congenital hearing impairment. In the financial year 2023-24, 4,05,521 children were screened at Anganwadi centers, while 4,06,161 school students underwent testing for congenital defects, physical disabilities, developmental issues, and childhood diseases. Additionally, 91 children with congenital heart disease received free surgical treatment in hospitals both within and outside the state.

The program’s impact extends beyond heart conditions. A total of 141 cleft lip and palate surgeries were performed, 105 clubfoot patients received corrective measures, and 73 hearing aids were distributed. Furthermore, 4 children with neural tube defects underwent surgery, and 67 children with autism received essential care. An impressive 32,787 other children with various health conditions were also treated.

The event witnessed the presence of key figures, including Brahmajit Kaur (Additional Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare), Prof. Dr. Sanjib Debbarma (Director, Health Department), Prof. Dr. HP Sharma (Director, Health Education), and CS Muthukumar (Pediatric Cardiologist, Apollo Children’s Hospital). Rajiv Dutta, Mission Director of the National Health Mission Tripura branch, extended a warm welcome to attendees. V Navin, CEO of Apollo Hospital, also participated in the occasion.

Six beneficiaries shared their experiences with the RBSK, and a documentary film highlighted the program’s impact.
