Agartala: Feb 15: The Congress party has appointed Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, its lone Member of Parliament from Odisha, as the new in-charge for Tripura, along with Manipur, Sikkim, and Nagaland. This move is part of a broader organizational overhaul within the party, aiming to revitalize its presence in the Northeast .

Ulaka replaces Christopher Tilak, who held the position for less than six months. The Congress party is struggling to strengthen its position in these states, particularly in Tripura, where it faces challenges with leadership and internal factionalism.

The appointment comes at a critical time, as Congress in Tripura is at odds with its former ally, the CPI(M), following the September 2024 Rajya Sabha elections. Ulaka's task will be to navigate these complexities and strengthen the party's presence in the region.

Other significant appointments include Bhupesh Baghel as general secretary in charge of Punjab, Syed Naseer Hussain for Jammu and Kashmir, Rajani Patil as in-charge for Himachal Pradesh, and Harish Chaudhary handling Madhya Pradesh. These changes reflect the party's efforts to address leadership gaps and strengthen its strategy in key regions .
