Agartala: Mar 22: Former MP Rebati Tripura addressed a press conference at the state BJP office today, commenting on the ongoing Tipra Motha movement demanding the use of Roman script for the Kokborok language. While acknowledging the democratic right to protest, Tripura expressed concern over the destructive nature of some protests, particularly those blocking essential services. He emphasized that such actions were deeply regrettable and inappropriate, urging the Tipra Motha youth organization to reconsider its protest.
Tripura highlighted that Tipra Motha, an ally of the ruling BJP, had long advocated for the use of Roman script in Kokborok. However, following the statement by Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha in the assembly, where he assured that the government would take measures regarding the issue after further discussions, Tripura questioned why the protests had not been withdrawn. He reiterated that while the right to protest is fundamental, it should not disrupt ordinary citizens' lives, especially by blocking essential services.
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty focused on the state’s financial progress. He presented the state budget for the fiscal years 2024–25 and 2025–26, which reflects an increase of nearly 20% compared to the previous year. The BJP government, he noted, had increased the budget from ₹15,000 crore during the Left Front government to ₹27,804.67 crore for 2024–25 and ₹32,423.44 crore for 2025–26, setting a new historic record for Tripura. The government has also allocated ₹7,903 crore for capital expenditure and over ₹1,948.69 crore for the health sector.
Additionally, the government has launched the "Chief Minister's Daughter Marriage Scheme," offering ₹50,000 for the marriage expenses of one daughter from Antyodaya families, with ₹10 crore allocated for mass weddings. The BJP thanked the Chief Minister and Finance Minister for presenting a progressive and humane budget.
