Agartala: Mar 28: Congress legislator Sudip Roy Barman has dropped a bombshell in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, accusing the state government of being complicit in a massive land corruption scam worth ₹10,000 crore. Barman claims that government employees are in cahoots with land mafias, facilitating illegal land transactions and conversions across the state. He's calling for a CBI investigation and urging Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha to step in immediately.
Barman's allegations are based on a letter written by the District Magistrate (DM) of Sepahijala on September 18, 2023, which highlights serious land corruption issues. The letter implicates two senior officials, Ratnajit Debbarma and Tapas Chowdhury, of colluding with land mafias and engaging in illegal land transfers. The DM recommended their immediate removal and investigation, but just 22 days later, the DM was transferred, which Barman sees as a retaliatory move.
Barman describes the land scam as one of the largest in Tripura's history, spanning eight districts and involving widespread irregularities. He accuses the BJP government of suppressing opposition voices and fostering a corrupt system where those fighting against injustice are silenced. The BJP government's handling of corruption has come under fire, with Barman's demand for a CBI investigation being met with criticism.
