Agartala, May 3: In a significant move aimed at saving lives in road accidents, Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced the launch of the "Rah-Veer" initiative during a review meeting held at the Sonar Tori Guest House in Agartala on Saturday. The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Transport Department, the Director, Traffic SP, and other senior officials.

Speaking after the meeting, the minister emphasized the importance of immediate medical assistance during the "Golden Hour"—the first hour after an accident—when timely intervention can significantly improve survival rates. However, he pointed out that many pedestrians hesitate to help accident victims due to fear of legal entanglements, resulting in preventable deaths.

To address this issue, the central government introduced the "Rah-Veer" initiative on April 21. Under the scheme, individuals who assist seriously injured accident victims by ensuring their quick transfer to a hospital within the Golden Hour will receive a one-time cash reward of ₹25,000 along with a government-issued certificate. Importantly, such helpers will not face any legal hassles.

If multiple individuals jointly assist a single victim, the reward will be shared equally among them. On the other hand, if one individual helps several victims, they will receive ₹25,000 for each case, up to five times per year.

Additionally, every year, 10 outstanding "Rah-Veer" volunteers will be honored nationally with an award of ₹1 lakh each for their exemplary service in saving lives.

Minister Chowdhury urged the public to actively participate in the initiative and assured that the Transport Department will work to raise awareness about the scheme across Tripura. The initiative is expected to foster a sense of civic responsibility and promote a culture of compassion and timely action in emergency situations.
