Agartala: Mar 24: The Dental Council of India (DCI) has granted approval for the commencement of a Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) course at Agartala Government Dental College. This announcement was made by Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha during the World Oral Health Day event held at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala. The event was organized jointly by the National Health Mission and the Indian Dental Association's state branch.

Dr. Saha, a dental surgeon by profession, shared his personal journey and emphasized the importance of compassion in healthcare. Reflecting on the significant improvements in the state’s health sector, he recalled how the establishment of a dental college in Agartala was once thought to be impossible. He credited his persistent efforts after 2018 for making this dream a reality, even when the previous government did not take proactive steps. The Chief Minister also highlighted advancements in dental treatment, with outdated practices being replaced by modern technology, underscoring the need for constant knowledge updates to provide the best care.

Dr. Saha expressed concern over the rising cases of oral cancer in the Northeast, particularly due to the consumption of gutkha and tobacco products. He announced the introduction of a mobile dental van to reach more patients and highlighted the ₹200 crore approved under the PM Divine Project for enhancing dental infrastructure. Alongside the MDS course, other developments include an increase in the number of dental seats and the introduction of super-specialty services, including kidney and liver transplants.

The event was attended by various health officials, including Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, NHM Director Prashant Badal Negi, and Tripura State Dental Council President Dr. S.M. Ali, alongside several medical professionals.
