High Court Grants Gratuity to Retired Anganwadi Workers and Helpers in Tripura

Agartala: May 09: A recent ruling by the High Court in Tripura has brought relief to retired Anganwadi workers and helpers. Justice S. Dutta Purkayasta delivered a landmark judgment directing the state government to provide gratuity to these workers under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972.

Despite their significant contributions to early childhood education and development, these workers had long been deprived of gratuity benefits. The Supreme Court had previously recognized the right of Anganwadi workers across the country to receive gratuity, raising hopes among retired workers in Tripura.

However, the state government and the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education initially denied their claims. In response, 20 aggrieved Anganwadi workers and helpers approached the High Court in 2023.

Senior advocate Purushottam Roy Barman represented the petitioners in court. The High Court ruled in favor of the workers, directing the state government to provide gratuity along with interest. This decision is expected to benefit not only the 20 petitioners but also over 10,000 Anganwadi workers and helpers across the state.

While the judgment brings much-needed relief, it also highlights concerns about the state government’s initial reluctance to grant rightful dues. The Anganwadi community sees this ruling as a step towards recognizing their valuable contributions.
