Petrol Crisis Grips State Amid Long Queues at Pumps

Agartala: May 09: Over the past few days, the state has been grappling with an extreme petrol crisis. Most petrol pumps are devoid of petrol, and even those that have some are witnessing long queues of motorists and bikers. Despite waiting in line from morning to evening, petrol remains elusive for many.

A bike driver expressed frustration to the news media, emphasizing that this situation cannot continue indefinitely. Meanwhile, petrol pump owners find it challenging to predict when the crisis will normalize. Adding to the complexity, a damaged track in the Lamding Division of Railways has been repaired, allowing passenger trains to resume operations. However, freight trains have yet to start running.

According to a petrol pump owner, the crisis could be resolved within 24 hours if freight trains resume service. Only the government and the railway department can provide clarity on when this will happen. The Chief Minister acknowledged the issue and revealed that a letter has been sent to the Union Railway Minister to expedite freight train movement. However, due to ongoing elections, direct communication has been challenging.

In anticipation of the crisis, the Food Department has implemented a pre-emptive rationing system. Unfortunately, this system has exacerbated the suffering of the common man. Additionally, the administration has struggled to curb the black market for petrol, where prices have soared to Tk 200 to Tk 300 per liter. The origin of this black market petrol remains a pressing question, awaiting clarification from administrative officials.
