Agartala: Mar 25: On the third day of the budget session in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister and Panchayat Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha addressed queries raised by MLAs Ramapada Jamatia and Deepak Majumdar regarding allowances for officials within the state's three-tier Panchayat system. The Chief Minister confirmed that the government is planning to increase allowances for a range of officials and members associated with the Panchayat system, which includes District Chairpersons, Assistant Chairpersons, Heads, Deputy Heads, Panchayat Samiti Chairpersons, Vice Chairpersons, and members.
Dr. Manik Saha explained that this decision was part of the government's ongoing efforts to enhance the functioning and efficiency of local self-governance institutions by ensuring that those in leadership and representative positions receive adequate support for their roles. The proposed allowance increase aims to improve the financial well-being of Panchayat officials and incentivize their commitment to serving the rural populace, ensuring the smooth functioning of Panchayats at various levels.
The Chief Minister further emphasized that the three-tier Panchayat system plays a vital role in decentralizing governance and ensuring that welfare schemes and developmental programs reach the grassroots level. By increasing allowances for these officials, the government hopes to strengthen local governance and encourage active participation in the democratic process.
Both MLAs, Jamatia and Majumdar, had raised concerns regarding the need for better compensation for these officials, considering the significant responsibilities they carry in managing and implementing various government programs at the local level. The announcement of the allowance increase was welcomed by the legislators, who viewed it as a positive step towards empowering local governance and improving the overall functioning of Panchayats in Tripura.
