Agartala: Mar 24: In the last three years (2022–2024), the Tripura government has made significant strides in combating drug trafficking, particularly cannabis, as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle the issue. According to a report shared by the Law Minister and Chief Minister, Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, the government has seized and destroyed over 54 lakh grams of cannabis plants, 8 lakh kilograms of dried cannabis, and 8.5 lakh kilograms of cannabis seeds. This was disclosed in a written response to questions raised by CPI(M) MLA Jitendra Choudhury, MLA Sudip Sarkar, MLA Nirmal Biswas, and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman during the second day of the budget session in the Tripura Legislative Assembly.

The Chief Minister emphasized that these efforts are part of the state’s commitment to combat drug trafficking and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens. In addition to the large-scale seizures, the Law Minister provided a detailed update on legal actions taken against traffickers. From March 2023 to February 2025, 99 cases have been filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and related laws. The police have made a substantial number of arrests, including 162 men and 79 women, on charges related to cannabis trafficking.

These actions are a testament to the government's focus on addressing the drug menace in the state. The significant quantities of cannabis seized and the number of arrests reflect the growing efforts of law enforcement agencies to crack down on drug trade networks. However, with the continuous rise of drug-related issues, the government's initiative underscores the need for further measures and stricter enforcement to ensure that the illegal drug trade is effectively controlled in Tripura.
