Agartala: Mar 24: In the 2023-24 fiscal year, Tripura witnessed 140 rape cases, with 144 women falling victim to such crimes, alongside 30 murder cases in which 31 women were murdered. This alarming data was shared by the Home Minister and Chief Minister, Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, in response to a question raised by MLA Swapna Debbarma during the second day of the budget session in the Tripura Legislative Assembly.
Dr. Saha provided further details on the ongoing investigations and legal proceedings. A total of 39 individuals have been arrested in connection with the 30 murder cases, with one accused already convicted by the court. He also noted that, at present, six individuals convicted in murder and rape cases are serving their sentences in prison.
This disclosure highlights the concerning issue of violence against women in the state. The Chief Minister’s statement reflects the government's acknowledgment of the severity of these crimes and the steps taken to ensure justice for the victims. By addressing the number of arrests and convictions, Dr. Saha sought to demonstrate the government's efforts in holding perpetrators accountable. However, the statistics also underscore the persistent challenges faced in tackling violence against women in the region.
The information shared in the legislative session has sparked concerns among lawmakers and citizens alike, emphasizing the need for stronger preventive measures and more effective law enforcement to combat gender-based violence. As the government continues to address these issues, it is hoped that further actions will be taken to reduce the occurrence of such crimes and ensure greater safety for women in the state.
