Cabinet discusses agriculture land conversion issue

The state cabinet on Wednesday discussed increasing agriculture land conversion for building of dwelling houses, said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath.While speaking to the media, the Minister termed the issue as sensitive as the government can’t stop any individual if he or she wants to convert agriculture land into use of residential purpose.The northeastern state has 65.64 lakh kani (10,491 square km) of which agriculture is practiced in 30.18 kani land and paddy is sown in only 15 lakh kani.Nath said the agriculture is the major contributor in the state’s total GSDP because the economy is originated from farming unlike other big states where industrial activities and service sectors contribute more.e said the government has initiated to use technology to lessen burden on land keeping in mind of the increasing population.According to him, the government is likely to come up with a policy on the matter related to use of agriculture land for residential purpose shortly. Nath also alleged leader of opposition in Assembly Jitendra Chaudhury has failed to perform his duty as the leader of oppostion.“He should learn from former Chief Minister and ex leader of oppostion leader Nripen Chakraborty on how to lead opposition in Assembly.
