Driver, co-driver given 12 yrs jail term in NDPS case

One truck driver and his companion, both from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur were sentenced to 12 years rigorous imprisonment for smuggling banned cause syrup at Bishalgarh.Addl District and Sessions judge Debasis Kar on Wednesday passed the verdict sentencing two motor workers in an NDPS Act. Besides, the court also slapped a fine of Rs. 1 lakh each and failing which they will have to spend eight month more in jail.Based on specific inputs, sub-inspector Parthapartim Reang chased a lorry coming from Agartala to Sonamura and detained it at Bishalgarh bypass on June 4, last year. During the search, as many as 47,984 bottles of banned cough syrup were found in the truck with registration number of Uttar Pradesh.he driver identified as Ankuj Sukla and co-driver Rajendra Singh, both from Kanpur of Uttar Pradesh were arrested for smuggling contraband items.After conducting investigation, a chargesheet was submitted before the Addl District and Sessions court at Bishalgarh claiming that the duo were involved in smuggling of contraband items.After hearing the case, the court ordered  12 years rigorous imprisonment to two persons and a fine of Rs. 1 lakh each failing which they need to remain in jail for another 8 months, said public prosecutor Gautam Giri.According to him, the verdict is seen as important amidst reports of growing smuggling of drugs and narcotic items across the state.
