The traffic movement between Assam-Agartala national highway was disrupted briefly near Maharanipur, Teliamura when local farmers faced resistance from neighbouring villagers from carrying out agricultural activities in plain lands. The villagers claimed that for the last 25 years they had been cultivating plain lands in the banks of the river of Haora without facing any objections. Even as they were not the rightful owners of the land, the highly productive nature of soil supported the local farmers in yielding good seasonal harvest. But in the last couple of days, the farmers alleged that a couple of influential individuals based out of Brahmacherra, a neighbouring village, started interfering in their work. The trouble makers, allegedly, asked the farmers to abstain from cultivating crops in the Khas land. They had also threatened dire consequences if their objection was violated. Some of them even asked to pay a sum of Rs 5,000 to temporarily use their land for agricultural activities. Aggrieved at the sudden interference in their primary source of livelihood, the farmers sought the intervention of Panchayat. They also sought the help from Police and also informed the Sub Divisional Magistrate office.
