Agartala: Jan 06: The "PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme" launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to provide affordable electricity to every household in India, fostering long-term development and people's welfare. The scheme encourages the use of solar power, which addresses the depletion of resources like coal and gas used for conventional power generation. Minister of Power, Ratan Lal Nath, emphasized this vision during a recent event organized by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL).
Minister Nath highlighted that the central objective of the scheme is to ensure access to almost free electricity for all, while promoting solar power generation. The scheme, which will continue until March 2026, enables households to install solar power systems on rooftops, balconies, and other spaces. Citizens can generate their own electricity and even sell any surplus power back to the TSECL, earning extra income.
The government is offering a subsidy of up to Rs. 85,800 to support installation costs. To register, individuals only need a mobile number and a copy of their electricity bill.
A success story shared by Nath involved a TSECL employee who installed a solar plant at home. Previously paying a monthly electricity bill of Rs. 2,700, this person now pays only Rs. 12. After one year, they plan to earn revenue by selling surplus power. With the addition of a grid connection, the project has been hailed as a groundbreaking initiative by PM Modi, helping citizens save on energy costs while contributing to a sustainable future.
