Fish demand in the state far exceeds supply: Sudhangshu

Agartala, June 13: Tripura’s Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das highlighted the significant disparity between fish demand and supply in the state. According to Das, the demand for fish far exceeds the available supply, necessitating the import of approximately 15,000 metric tonnes of fish from outside the state.

Speaking at a meeting held in Agartala’s Gorkhabasti, Das emphasized the need to review ongoing projects undertaken by the Fisheries Department during the 2023-24 financial year. The goal was to assess the current fish production scenario and expedite project implementation.

Over the years, fish demand has steadily risen, while supply struggles to keep pace. Consequently, the state faces a shortage of fish, prompting reliance on imports. To address this challenge, the state government is implementing several measures. These include constructing new fish ponds, distributing fish fry to farmers, and providing training on modern fish farming techniques.

Minister Das expressed optimism that these efforts would enhance fish production within the state, ultimately meeting the growing demand.
