No casualty from state in Kanchanjunga train mishap, says officials

Agartala, Jun. 17 : A two-member team of Tripura Bhavan, Kolkata will be reaching the train accident site at Rangapani near Siliguri by Monday to extend all possible help to the victims from Tripura, said a senior official.

At least five persons died while 30 others were injured when Kanchanjunga Express was hit by a goods train at Rangapani, 7 km away from New Jalpaiguri station on Monday morning.

Chief Minister Manik Saha who has also spoken to Union Railway Minister Ashwani Vaishaw , is personally monitoring the situation aftermath of the rail accident, state’s Home Secretary Pradip Kumar Chakravarty told the media.

“Although Kanchanjunga Express left Agartala station on Sunday night, there was no fatal casualty from the state. We have sought passenger data from the railway authority to check if there is any casualty from our side”, he said.

Chakravarty said a two-member team from Kolkata’s Tripura Bhavan will leave for the accident site at Rangapani to extend all possible help to the possible victims from the state.

“The team is expected to reach the site from Bagdogra airport by evening and will get better feedback from the ground. The government declared to provide Rs. 2 lakh to the next kin in case of any death in the accident”, he said.

The Kanchanjunga express which was scheduled to extend its service from Sealdah to Sabroom via Agartala on June 18 has been suspended.
