Agartala: Mar 26: The absence of a principal opposition party in the Tripura Assembly is being seen as a major embarrassment for the government. Congress legislator Sudip Roy Barman made this statement in reaction to Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen's role on the fourth day of the budget session. The opposition CPI(M) has decided to boycott the remaining days of the assembly session, citing the Speaker's bias as the reason .
The controversy began when Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath allegedly made derogatory and racist remarks against opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury. The CPI(M) demanded an apology, but the Speaker accepted a privilege motion against the opposition leader instead, leading to allegations of bias .
The boycott is seen as a significant development, with the CPI(M) accusing the Speaker of undermining democracy and silencing dissenting voices. The opposition party has vowed to continue their agitation until the minister takes responsibility for his words.
The situation has highlighted the growing tension between the ruling BJP and the opposition CPI(M) in Tripura. With elections on the horizon, both parties are positioning themselves strategically, using the controversy to appeal to their respective voter bases.
