TU’s Economics Department recommends fund for Tripura under 16th Finance Commission

A team of experts led by Prof. Subhrabaran Das, Head of the Economics Department at Tripura University, is preparing a report titled "Study on Evaluation of Finances for the Tripura State." The report is part of the recommendations for the 16th Finance Commission, Government of India. The team includes Kiran Bhowmik, a Ph.D. scholar and research associate, and Srijan Debnath, an assistant research associate.The 16th Finance Commission, constituted under Article 280 of the Constitution and the Finance Commission Act, 1951, is chaired by Dr. Arvind Panagariya, former Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog. The commission focuses on key financial issues such as tax revenue distribution between the Union and States, grants-in-aid, and strengthening local governance. It also reviews disaster management funding.According to state government sources, Dr. Panagariya and his team, including members like Ajay Narayan Jha, Annie George Mathew, Manoj Panda, Soumya Kanti Ghosh, and Ritvik Ranjanam Pandey, will visit Tripura on January 29, 2025. They will meet with elected officials and administrative personnel to discuss financial matters.The team led by Prof. Das is working on issues like revenue estimation, improving tax and non-tax revenue, tax buoyancy, and revenue expenditure. A draft report has already been submitted to the commission, with the final report expected by January 31
