New Criminal Laws Enacted in State: A Modernization Effort

Agartala: July 01: Today, three new criminal laws have taken effect in our state, aligning with nationwide changes. These legislative updates aim to streamline legal processes and enhance security. To ensure widespread awareness, awareness programs are underway, educating the public and all stakeholders about the provisions of these new laws.

At a press conference held in the conference hall of the District Magistrate’s office in West Tripura district, District Magistrate and Collector Dr. Biswajit Kumar shared details of the new laws. Joining him, District Police Superintendent Dr. Kiran Kumar highlighted key aspects during the same press conference.

Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023: Replacing the Indian Penal Code, 1860, Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023: Replacing the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973, Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023: Replacing the Indian Evidence Act, 1872. These laws address the need for modernization. Many of the previous laws were outdated, some dating back 120 to 160 years. The new legislation aims to expedite trials, improve justice delivery, and enhance conviction rates.

Under the new law, individuals can file an FIR from any location, regardless of where the incident occurred. Additionally, e-FIRs are now possible. The entire trial process, from investigation to evidence presentation, will incorporate electronic methods. Oral evidence will be accepted electronically, carrying equal weight as written direct evidence. Witnesses can provide testimony even from a distance.

These reforms mark a significant step toward a more efficient and just legal system, benefiting citizens across the state.
