State Government Celebrates GST Day, Highlights Tax Sector Growth

Agartala: July 01: In a significant milestone, the state government celebrated the 8th Goods and Services Tax (GST) Day at Pragna Bhaban. Finance Minister Pranajit Sinharai emphasized that the government has not imposed any additional tax burden on citizens in the last six years. However, during the fiscal year 2022-23, tax collections exceeded 3,000 crores across various sectors. The state’s revenue in this sector continues to rise due to collaborative efforts between the government and taxpayers.

During the event, businesses that paid the highest taxes in the previous financial year were felicitated. Additionally, agents with substantial deposits in the micro savings scheme were recognized. Subhrajit Chowdhury, son of an agent from Halhuli’s Small Savings Scheme, received accolades for securing the top position in this year’s Tripura Board of Madhya Shiksha Parshad 12th examination.

Finance Minister Pranjit Sinharai also highlighted the crucial role of communication systems in regional development. Since 2014, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, connectivity in the North Eastern region, including Tripura, has significantly improved. The state now boasts 19 rail services and enhanced air connectivity. Furthermore, the upcoming exchange of goods through Bangladesh via Chittagong port and Maitri Bridge promises further development.

Finance Department Secretary Apoorba Roy shared that the GST sector’s income in the state for 2022-23 stands at approximately 1,899 crores. He expressed optimism that tax collections in this sector will grow by 15 percent over the next five years. CGST Commissioner TV Ravi and Additional Secretary Finance Akinchan Sarkar were among the dignitaries present at the event, which also saw taxpayers and small savings scheme agents from various parts of the state come together to celebrate GST Day.
