Agartala: Sept 18: Between August 19th and 23rd, heavy rainfall led to widespread floods and landslides across various districts of the state, causing significant damage to life and property. The forest department’s infrastructure was severely affected, with around 450-470 check dams completely destroyed and central nurseries significantly damaged.

Restoration efforts have commenced, but the damage extends to plantations of sal and teak trees, ranger offices, senior staff quarters, and vocational training centers. Forest area walls have also suffered considerable damage. The forest department estimates an initial loss of around 7 to 8 crore rupees, but this figure could rise to 15 to 20 crore rupees. Due to inaccessible roads, the total damage might ultimately reach 30 to 40 crore rupees. Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma shared these details at a press conference on Wednesday.

The minister confirmed that there have been no reports of wildlife deaths due to the floods. He assured that restoration efforts are ongoing. Additionally, over 38,000 families, affecting approximately 1,49,087 people, have been displaced by the floods and are currently housed in 821 relief camps. The continuous adverse weather conditions have impacted everyone.

In response to the crisis, the forest department has mobilized its rapid task force to address immediate challenges, such as clearing road blockages caused by fallen trees. Other forest department officials were also present at the press conference.
