Tripura Government Addresses Teacher Shortage in Colleges

Agartala: Jan 10: During the winter session of the Tripura Assembly, Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha announced that standard procedures are being followed to address the teacher shortage in colleges. The recruitment process for 401 positions will be completed at various stages soon. This information was provided in response to a question raised by CPM MLA Ashok Chandra Mitra.
Chief Minister Saha stated that the Tripura Public Service Commission has been requested to conduct exams for 201 Assistant Professor positions. Additionally, the cabinet has approved filling 200 more Assistant Professor positions, and the finance department has given its approval. The process will begin soon.
Currently, 72,009 students are studying in 31 general degree colleges in the state, which have a total of 787 teachers, including PGTs, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors. According to UGC guidelines, one teacher is required for every 60 students. To fill this gap, 710 guest teachers have been appointed. Statistics indicate that 1,231 teachers are needed in general degree colleges.
MLA Ashok Chandra Mitra expressed concern that the teacher shortage in government degree colleges is negatively impacting students' studies. He urged the higher education department to expedite the teacher recruitment process, noting that there is no shortage of eligible candidates in the state.
Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy also raised the issue of the new education policy and the teacher-student ratio as per the National Education Policy. Additionally, Tipra Motha MLAs Pal Dangsu and Pathan Lal Jamatia demanded that the Longtarai Valley and Kanchanpur General Degree Colleges be named after Shyamacharan Tripura and Drau Kumar Riang, respectively, in recognition of their contributions to the state.
