Farmers Protest Over Lack of Compensation for Flood Damages

Agartala: Dec 06: Pabitra Kar, the state committee secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha, strongly criticized the Tripura government for its alleged neglect of farmers affected by the devastating floods in August. During a press conference held at Kisan Bhavan on Friday, Kar accused the state government of ignoring repeated demands to declare the floods a national disaster and provide adequate compensation to the farmers. He claimed that, despite submitting a list of farmers who had not received government assistance to Minister Ratan Lal Nath, no action had been taken.

Kar revealed that the All India Kisan Sabha plans to send representatives to meet the district magistrates of all districts by December 20 to press for action. If the situation does not improve, the organization intends to escalate the matter by approaching the state chief secretary. He warned that if the government continues to ignore the plight of the farmers, the organization would launch a mass movement to demand justice.

Additionally, Kar raised concerns about the procurement price of paddy, stating that while the Tripura government is procuring paddy at Rs 23 per kilogram, the Kerala government is offering Rs 28.20 per kilogram. He questioned why the Tripura government cannot increase the procurement price to support farmers adequately.

Other leaders of the All India Kisan Sabha, including Motilal Sarkar and Ratan Das, were also present at the press conference, supporting Kar’s statements and highlighting the urgent need for government intervention.
