Agartala: Feb 27: The Agartala Municipal Corporation's (AMC) recent demolition of illegally constructed roads and temporary shops in Lake Choumuhani Bazar has sparked controversy. The affected traders claim that the administration carried out the eviction drive without providing alternative arrangements for rehabilitation.

This incident follows a visit by Mayor Deepak Majumdar to Lake Chaumuhani Bazar, where he ordered the removal of illegally constructed shops. Despite this warning, the small traders did not vacate the premises, leading to the AMC's demolition of the shops using bulldozers.

The traders allege that they have been conducting business in the area since the Rajya Sabha period and have never faced eviction before. They claim that the AMC's actions have caused financial losses to many families and have left them disoriented.

Similar anti-encroachment drives have been conducted by the AMC in the past, with Mayor Dipak Majumder leading initiatives to clear public spaces and roads of illegal constructions . However, the traders' allegations of inadequate rehabilitation arrangements highlight the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing encroachment issues in Agartala.
