State gets its first electric locomotive-powered goods train

The state got its first electric locomotive-powered train on Thursday.Speaking to the media, K K Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Northeast Frontier Railway, said, “After the successful completion of electric loco trials in the Badarpur-Agartala section, the first goods train movement with electric locomotive took place in the section on February 5, 2025, when a loaded 21 wagon BCN goods train departed from Badarpur at 7.30 pm, and successfully reached Jirania in Tripura.”The train reached Jirania railway station in West Tripura district at 1.12 am on Thursday. Jirania station is roughly 17 km from Agartala railway station. Asked about the introduction of electric passenger trains in Tripura, the CPRO said, “Passenger train movement with electric loco will also start soon in this region, once some more trials with goods trains are completed and sufficient experience is gained.”A Rs 46-crore railway electrification project was launched in 2022 to connect the state with the national railway grid.NFR officials had earlier suggested that the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) would supply power to railway electric transmission lines by February
