Agartala: Mar 03: In a significant operation, the Tripura Police successfully seized 21 kg and 65 grams of dried cannabis, valued at over three lakh rupees, after acting on confidential information. The raid led to the arrest of two women from Bihar, Sunita Devi (48) and Rita Devi (35), who were reportedly involved in smuggling the drugs.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tapas Das, the police received reliable intelligence that smugglers would be passing through Agartala railway station to transport cannabis. Acting on this tip-off, the police launched an operation in the vicinity of the railway station. During the operation, the two women were detained as they appeared suspicious, and upon searching them, the large quantity of dried cannabis was found hidden in their possession.
The market value of the seized cannabis is estimated to be over three lakh rupees, underlining the scale of the smuggling operation. The police suspect that this was part of a larger network trafficking drugs through the region. OC Das stated that both women, Sunita Devi and Rita Devi, are residents of Bihar, but their exact connection to the broader drug trafficking syndicate is still under investigation.
The police have indicated that the arrested individuals will be produced in court, where they will seek police remand for further interrogation. The authorities are working to uncover the full extent of the operation and identify any other individuals or groups involved in the smuggling network.
This operation highlights the continued efforts of law enforcement in Tripura to combat illegal drug trade and enhance security across the state, particularly in areas with significant transportation links like Agartala railway station.
