The Department of Economics, Tripura University, successfully organized a discussion on the ‘Union Budget – 2025’ at the Conference Hall of the Central Library on 19th February last. The event brought together distinguished academicians, finance experts, and students, making it an insightful and engaging session.The program commenced with the welcoming of guests on the dais, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Prof. Subhrabaran Das, Head of the Department of Economics, delivered the welcome address, setting the stage for an in-depth analysis of the budget. The event was attended by Debasish Pal, Finance Officer, along with the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor (i/c), Prof. Badal Kumar Dutta, who addressed the gathering and emphasized the budget’s economic implications across various sectors.A major highlight of the event was the special lecture by the Chief Guest, Prof. Ajitava Raychaudhuri, Emeritus Professor at Adamas University and former Head at Jadavpur University. His comprehensive analysis shed light on fiscal policies, economic growth, and developmental priorities outlined in the Union Budget – 2025. Additionally, the Guest of Honour, Dr. Dhanpat Ram Agarwal, Director of the Institute of International Trade, Kolkata, delivered an enlightening lecture on the budget’s impact on trade, industry, and financial markets.The discussion covered key areas such as human capital, infrastructure, and taxation. Special attention was given to education and healthcare, while infrastructure development focused on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. A shift in capital expenditure reporting, including MGNREGS, sparked debate on its classification. Increased credit availability was announced for MSMEs and startups. In agriculture, efforts were emphasized to boost production and supply efficiency, with support for farmer organizations. Taxation changes included reductions in direct taxes, while indirect taxes remained under the GST council, prompting discussions on the impact of income tax cuts amid rising food prices.Overall, the discussion at Tripura University provided a comprehensive examination of the Union Budget – 2025, equipping students and faculty with a deeper understanding of the country’s fiscal direction. The event proved to be an enriching experience, fostering critical analysis and dialogue on India’s economic future.
