Agartala, Jan. 29 : Severe allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement had been raised against the Sonamura Municipal Council. According to sources, construction work was awarded to a handpicked contractor bypassing the tendering process.

When confronted by the contractors who participated in the tendering process, the municipal authorities allegedly failed to provide any justified explanation. The incident led to conflict of interest between the elected representatives of the civic body and the Municipal Commissioner, sources privy to the internal developments said.

According to reports, the municipal council issued advertisements in mid-January for 33 development projects. Most of these projects were essentially related to construction of Madhuban Cremation Ground and a dumping station in Khedabari.

The total value of the project was around Rs 65 lakh. However, instead of a single tender for each site, separate tenders were issued for individual components such as cremation walls, chimneys, roofs, and platforms.
