Agartala: April 13: Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has issued an urgent public alert in response to rising cases of cyber fraud. Scammers are impersonating TSECL officials through fake calls and messages, falsely claiming unpaid electricity bills. They pressure unsuspecting customers into making immediate payments or downloading malicious apps, resulting in theft of confidential banking details.

A recent case in Jogendranagar, Agartala, highlighted the severity of the issue. A family availing solar electricity under the Prime Minister’s Suryaghar Yojana received a fraudulent message claiming to be from TSECL. They were tricked into downloading an app, which led to financial loss.

TSECL strongly condemned such incidents and clarified that it never contacts customers from unknown numbers or instructs them to download unauthorized applications. The corporation’s only official app is BidyutBandhu, available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Authentic messages are sent only from verified sender IDs like “TSECLI.”

To prevent further fraud, TSECL has released a comprehensive advisory:

  • Do not trust unknown calls, links, or messages.

  • Avoid downloading APK files via WhatsApp, SMS, or email.

  • Never share OTPs or bank details with strangers.

  • Be alert to frauds disguised as reconnection charges or dues.

Victims or anyone receiving suspicious messages should immediately report to the nearest police station, visit the national cybercrime reporting portal www.cybercrime.gov.in, or call the helpline 1930.

A TSECL spokesperson emphasized, “We are deeply concerned and committed to customer safety. Awareness is key.” The corporation is set to launch state-wide awareness campaigns and will work closely with law enforcement.
