Agartala: April 16: Agartala witnessed high political drama as the Pradesh Congress organized a protest on Tuesday against what it termed the “blatant misuse” of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) by the Narendra Modi-led BJP government. The party alleged that the ED is being weaponized to target opposition leaders, particularly Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, under false charges.
The protest saw Congress workers gather in large numbers to gherao the ED office in the city. Tensions escalated when clashes broke out between demonstrators and the police, disrupting normalcy in the surrounding areas. Police had to intervene to control the situation, as tempers flared among the agitating party workers.
Ashish Kumar Saha, Pradesh Congress President, accused the BJP government of orchestrating a systematic campaign to discredit Congress leaders. “The BJP is misusing central agencies to harass Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi by fabricating chargesheets against them. This is part of a bigger conspiracy to divert attention from real issues facing the public,” Saha claimed.
Echoing similar sentiments, senior Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman said, “This government is trying to malign Congress leaders both inside and outside Parliament to deflect public focus from issues like unemployment, inflation, and social unrest. But these lessons in political misuse won’t be forgotten. Congress is documenting each instance of abuse of power and will ensure accountability in due time.”
The Congress leaders vowed to continue their fight against what they call “undemocratic practices” of the Modi government, stressing that such political intimidation tactics would only strengthen their resolve.
With tensions running high and political tempers flaring, the protest signals a deepening divide in the political landscape, with Congress positioning itself firmly against what it sees as growing authoritarianism.
