Agartala, April 16: Road safety took center stage at a high-level meeting held at the Sonar Tori Guest House, where former Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb addressed growing concerns over traffic hazards in West Tripura district. The meeting, part of a quarterly road safety committee initiative, brought together key stakeholders including Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Deepak Majumdar and West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar.
Deb highlighted the alarming rise in traffic accidents in the region, attributing it to reckless driving, illegal parking, and lack of enforcement of road safety norms. He emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive, district-specific road safety action plan that not only curbs the increasing number of accidents but also works toward minimizing fatalities.
“We must identify the root causes of road accidents in the district and develop targeted strategies to address them. Strict administrative action is essential against violators of traffic rules, especially those involved in illegal parking and unlicensed driving,” said Deb.
The discussions focused on strengthening the implementation of existing road safety standards, improving traffic management, and enhancing public awareness on safe driving practices. Illegal parking across key urban areas was identified as a significant contributor to traffic congestion and accidents.
Deb also called upon the youth to take an active role in spreading awareness about road safety, suggesting that community involvement would be key to bringing about lasting change.
Mayor Deepak Majumdar and DM Dr. Vishal Kumar echoed the need for coordinated efforts between municipal bodies, law enforcement, and civil society to improve road conditions and traffic behavior in the city.
The meeting concluded with a consensus on launching intensified awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement measures in the coming months.
