59th Annual Conference of The Indian Econometric Society Begins at BHU

 The 59th Annual Conference of The Indian Econometric Society (TIES) commenced today at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, bringing together leading economists, researchers, policymakers, and financial experts from across the country. Jointly organized by the Department of Economics, BHU, and TIES, the prestigious event is co-hosted by the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID). The three-day conference, running from March 3 to 5, 2025, aims to foster discussions on key economic, financial, and developmental issues shaping India’s future.The conference was inaugurated at Swatantrata Bhawan with an impressive lineup of distinguished speakers. The event began with floral tributes to Mahamana Malaviya ji, followed by a traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp.Dr. Mrutyunjaya Mishra, Head of the Department of Economics, BHU, welcomed the gathering, setting the stage for insightful discussions. The inaugural address was delivered by Shri Suman Bery, Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog, who highlighted India's evolving economic landscape and the role of empirical research in shaping policies. Dr. Sudipto Mundle, President of TIES and Chairman of the Centre for Development Studies, India, provided the presidential address, emphasizing the importance of econometrics in economic policymaking. The session was further enriched by the Sukhamoy Chakravarty Memorial Lecture, delivered by Dr. Deepak Nayyar, Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi, on the topic "Whither Globalization? Through the Lens of History." This insightful lecture explored the historical evolution of globalization and its future trajectory.The conference features multiple parallel technical sessions, providing a platform for researchers to present their work on a wide range of economic issues. From monetary policy transmission and labor markets to climate change, artificial intelligence in financial markets, and industrial development, the sessions are designed to encourage meaningful academic discourse.A notable invited lecture was delivered by Dr. Chetan Ghate, Former Director of the Institute of Economic Growth, on “Monetary Policy Transmission and Labour Markets in India.” The session was chaired by Dr. Bandi Kamaiah, Former President of TIES. Another key highlight was the lecture on Auction Theory and its Recent Developments, presented by Dr. Krishnendu Ghosh Dastidar, Professor at JNU, providing valuable insights into modern economic strategies.Day two will witness engaging discussions on recent developments in stock and commodity markets, featuring Dr. Tirthankar Patnaik, Chief Economist at NSE, and Dr. Debojyoti Dey, AVP at Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), Mumbai. The discussion will be chaired by Dr. N.R. Bhanumurthy, Director of the Madras School of Economics.Another crucial lecture on Socioeconomic Impacts of Climate Change will be delivered by Dr. K. Narayanan, Head of the Department of Economics, IIT Bombay, with Dr. S. Mahendra Dev, Editor of EPW and Former President of TIES, serving as the session chair.Artificial intelligence in financial markets will also take center stage, with an invited special lecture by Dr. Vijaya Marisetty from IIM Visakhapatnam, focusing on how AI is transforming economic forecasting, risk assessment, and financial modeling.A special panel discussion on the local economy, developmental issues, and infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh will feature esteemed panelists such as Dr. Jagdish Narayan from the University of Allahabad, Samuel Joseph Jebaraj, Deputy Managing Director of NaBFID, and Dr. Alok Kumar Mishra from the University of Hyderabad. This discussion aims to address challenges and opportunities in regional economic development.The final day of the conference will include a special session on Prof. V.N. Pandit’s contribution to econometrics, featuring key speakers such as Dr. K.L. Krishna, Former Director of the Delhi School of Economics, and Dr. S. Mahendra Dev.The event will conclude with a TIES Award Presentation Ceremony, recognizing outstanding contributions to the field of econometrics. The valedictory session will include remarks from distinguished guests, followed by a closing address and a vote of thanks.With the participation of leading economists, financial experts, and policymakers, the 59th Annual Conference of TIES stands as a pivotal event in shaping economic research and policy formulation in India.
