Agartala: Dec 18: In a counterfeit currency case that lasted for a decade, the Dharmanagar Sessions Court sentenced the accused, Helal Uddin, to five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of five thousand rupees. In case of default, an additional six months of imprisonment will be served. The judgment was delivered on Wednesday, based on the testimonies of seven witnesses.

The incident occurred on November 1, 2014, around 6:00 PM, when Helal Uddin, a resident of Uttar Padambil in North Tripura’s Panisagar, visited Kshitish Chandra Debnath's grocery store in Dharmanagar. After making some purchases, he handed the shopkeeper a five-hundred rupee note, which raised suspicion. Upon closer inspection, the note appeared to be counterfeit. The shopkeeper, along with others, immediately alerted the Dharmanagar police station. The police quickly arrived at the scene and, after searching the accused, found six counterfeit five-hundred rupee notes, totaling three thousand rupees.

A case was filed under Sections 389B and 389C of the Indian Penal Code at Dharmanagar police station, and the investigation was initially handled by Officer Nandadulal Saha. The counterfeit currency was later confirmed by a forensic report. During the investigation, a youth named Almas Ali from Dakshin Kadamtala was initially detained but was released after being found innocent. Following the transfer of the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Debjyoti Chatterjee took over the case and submitted the charge sheet to the Dharmanagar District and Sessions Court.

The case was pursued by government lawyer Partha Pal. After ten years of legal proceedings, the court convicted Helal Uddin based on the evidence presented and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment and a fine under two sections of the IPC.
