Tripura Hosts 72nd Plenary Meeting of North Eastern Council

Agartala: Dec 21: Tripura stands at a pivotal moment in history as it hosts the 72nd plenary meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) for the second time. The event, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, took place on Saturday at the Prajna Bhavan in Agartala. The meeting was attended by key dignitaries including Union Ministers Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia, Sukanta Majumdar, and the Governors and Chief Ministers of the North Eastern states, along with senior administrative officials.
The proceedings began with a lamp lighting ceremony, marking the official start of the NEC’s 72nd plenary. Amit Shah, in his address, highlighted the critical developments in the region over the past decade. He emphasized that the past ten years have been transformative for the North East, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi bringing global attention to the region. Shah noted that under Modi's leadership, significant strides have been made in improving infrastructure and connectivity between the North East and Delhi. He also underscored the importance of peace in the region, citing the signing of over 20 agreements and the surrender of over 9,000 insurgents who have reintegrated into society.
Shah also spoke about the government’s efforts to make the North East self-reliant and integrated with the global economy. He pointed out that the North East’s connectivity issues are being resolved, which will open doors for international markets. The government has already approved the establishment of three semiconductor units in the region, which will boost its economy.
Further, he called for greater efforts to eradicate drug abuse in the region and emphasized that North East India could lead the country in creating a drug-free India. He also urged Chief Ministers to engage in discussions about law enforcement with police officials. The meeting ended with a session on banking and the state’s economic development.
